Introduced in 2001, the Dot NAME universal top-level domain extension is the sole TLD planned for personal web pages only. These domain names can include personal or fictional names, aliases and/or other titles people are known by. At the beginning, solely third-level registrations were allowed, so if you wished to acquire john.doe.name, you had to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were loosened and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already grabbed third-level domain names remained online.
